US and Iran Hold Indirect Talks on Avoiding Regional Escalation

Top Officials Engage in Diplomacy Amidst Heightened Tensions

Tehran Seeks to Prevent Further Conflict

In an attempt to de-escalate tensions and prevent further military escalation, the Biden administration has engaged in indirect talks with Iranian officials.

Tensions between the two countries have been high since the killing of three US troops and the wounding of dozens more by Iran-backed militants on Sunday. President Trump had previously called off a military operation to strike Iran in retaliation for the downing of a US drone.

According to Axios, the talks are aimed at establishing a mechanism for indirect communication between the US and Iran. The goal is to avoid misunderstandings and miscalculations that could lead to a wider conflict.

The US has reportedly struck 84 out of 85 targets in its response to the attack on US troops, but there have been no indications of any Iranian casualties. The UN nuclear watchdog chief has also traveled to Iran in an effort to maintain monitoring of the country's nuclear program.
