Vintage Trains' GWR 4073 Class Castle Overhaul: A Historic Restoration

From Ogmore Castle to Restored Glory

In the annals of railway preservation, the restoration of the third GWR 4073 Class Castle 4-6-0 steam locomotive, No. 4073, by Vintage Trains stands as a testament to the dedication and expertise of railway enthusiasts. Originally built as Ogmore Castle in May 1939, this iconic locomotive served tirelessly until its withdrawal from service in April 1963.

The Restoration Process

The ambitious project to restore Ogmore Castle began in 2010. Over 10,000 hours of painstaking work were invested in rebuilding the locomotive, from the overhaul of its boiler and running gear to the restoration of its iconic livery. The project involved the collaboration of skilled craftsmen, engineers, and historians, ensuring that the locomotive was brought back to its former glory with meticulous attention to detail.

Return to Service

On March 20, 2023, after years of tireless effort, No. 4073 emerged from its restoration workshops in all its grandeur. The locomotive made a triumphant return to service, hauling passenger trains on various heritage railways across the United Kingdom. Its presence on the tracks evokes a sense of nostalgia, transporting passengers back to a bygone era of steam travel.
