TikTok Ban Spreads Globally Amidst Security Concerns
A Growing Trend
The popular video-sharing app TikTok has encountered a surge of bans across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. Notably, the European Parliament, European Commission, and EU Council have prohibited TikTok on staff devices due to security concerns.
US Threatens Ban
The United States has also expressed concerns about TikTok's handling of user data, threatening a potential ban. US lawmakers and authorities fear that data from TikTok's 170 million US users could be compromised.
TikTok's Response
TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew responded to the ban threats in a video posted on TikTok moments after President Joe Biden announced his concern. Chew emphasized that TikTok is committed to protecting user data and has invested heavily in security measures.
International Bans
Beyond the European Union, international government bodies such as the European Commission and NATO have also banned their staff from using TikTok on corporate devices, citing similar security concerns.
